Hi, My name is Sandy Hall and I am your Middle School/ Jr. High AEAI Representative. Presently I teach seventh and eigth graders at Greenfield Central Junior High, 1440 N. Franklin Street, Greenfield IN 46140. If you have any questions or concerns about middle school students, programs or lessons, feel free to contact me.
What makes art happen? Divide your students into groups, lay an art print in front of them and let them talk about what they see. Leap-ins or asking big questions allow students to open their minds to an approach to art like none other. I’ve found some of the keys to a good lesson turning to a neighbor, discussing a quote, stirring up a discussion based on an art related news article or bringing in a new medium. Prepare them by setting the stage for learning.
So what makes art happen for art teachers? Attend our Ft. Wayne Convention and learn how AEAI can work for you?
In July, St. Mary AEAI participants determined they needed to listen, take risks, and get out of their comfort zone. As they renewed their love to create in this non threatening atmosphere, they explored luminosity with acrylics by blocking in an under painting of complementary colors. After determining the darkest darks and the lightest lights, they added the values and colors needed to “bring it home.” Glazing thin layers of transparent color deepened their expressions with shadows and highlights. I saw a lot of smiles and some frustration
s but together we experienced a “happening.” The results were striking.
AEAI Fall Convention News
Look for opportunities to grow through upcoming AEAI activities. Sign up for Workshop #20 during this year's AEAI State convention. We will be using oil pastels and markers to create luminosity while painting. Session is scheduled for Friday at 4 pm in Harrison C. It is a ticketed event and the fee is $5. Sargent Art will provide supplies.
Also plan to attend the Division Luncheon in the Calhoun Ballroom AB Level 2, Noon-1 pm. Use the escalator. Get to know other middle level art teachers during this informal time. This is free with paid convention registration.

Do you have an interest to paint of an evening, once or twice a month, during the school year at the Creative Arts and Event Center, 2 W. Main in Greenfield? During Youth Art Month, I am planning an exhibition of art teacher’s work at the center.
Want to participate? Send me an email and we’ll work out the details. Keep in touch
