I am preparing our state's Youth Art Month Scrapbook album to send on to the national organization in charge of the event. You are being asked to send me emails or hard copies of photographs, exhibit announcements, newspaper articles, copies of ads or billboards you created to promote the value of art education (especially during the month of March). The organization seems to be especially interested in how you have used "media" (the internet, t.v., radio, newspapers etc.) to promote visual arts education.
We all know what state cuts have done to affect our programs and I am sure that you all worked even harder than usual to promote your departments this year. Any documentation that you can send will be welcome to place into our album which is due in it's completed form by the end of this month so I would appreciate items as soon as possible.
Thank you to those who have already shared program highlights with me. You are an amazing group of professionals. Thank you also for being members of A.E.A.I. and supporting our activities.
My land address is: 3705 Gamble Lane, Lafayette, IN 47909.
On July 1st, Larry Hurt unexpectedly passed away of natural causes while preparing for choir practice at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Indianapolis. He had been Choir Director there for over 30 years. Though his service to his church was dear to him, many of us are more familiar with the significant role he played in art education in Indiana.
Larry was well known as a gifted and remarkable art teacher, where he served the students of Ben Davis High School for many years. In 1999, however, his reputation as a preeminent art teacher grew beyond Wayne Township when Larry was named the Indiana Teacher of the Year. With this honor, Larry served as Ambassador to the Indiana Department of Education, speaking throughout the state expressing his values and passion for teaching.
His students admired him greatly and chose Larry 15 years in a row for the Senior’s Choice Awards. He was Ben Davis Teacher of the Year in 1991 and in 1998, and Teacher of the Year of Wayne Township in 1998. He received the Prelude Awards/Kightlinger and Gray Outstanding Arts Educator Award in 1998, the Governor’s Art Award in 1999, and in 1992 was one of three visual arts teachers honored by the Walt Disney Company’s American Teacher Award. He also served as an Executive Council Member of the Art Education Association of Indiana.
Larry was a dedicated servant at Ben Davis High School. He co-founded the Special Arts Club; an outreach program that brings special needs students and art students together in a peer-tutoring environment. Larry was also chaired the Ben Davis School Improvement Committee, the North Central Association and Performance-Based Accreditation committees, and has served as an active member of the Wayne District Strategic Planning Team.
Larry Hurt earned the B.A. degree in art education at Purdue University in 1973 and his M.S. in education at Butler University in 1983. He was currently working on his Ph.D. in Art Education at Purdue.
Those who knew Larry considered him as a model professional and an outstanding human being. One you always learned from and loved being with. He elevated the quality of life wherever he went. He will be greatly missed. NAEA President-Elect Robert Sabol noted that, “Indiana has lost one of its premier art educators with his passing. He inspired so many students and teachers with his love of art and teaching that our field is diminished with his death, but the inspiration he left behind in those he touched with his teaching will live on.”
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Visitation will be in the Emmaus Way at St. Christopher Church on Tuesday, July 6th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. On Wednesday morning, July 7th, there will be viewing from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with the Liturgy of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m.

RESPONDING TO REDUCTIONS IN ART PROGRAMS AND ART TEACHER LAYOFFS
AEAI is extremely concerned about the number of reductions in art programming and art teachers that has been occurring with frequency in Indiana. To contend with this development, I have been writing letters to school board members, superintendents, and other administrators when I have learned they are considering cuts to art programs. These letters emphasize the need for art education in our schools and request that members look to other alternative and avoid reductions.
If you are aware of school corporations that are considering these reductions PLEASE contact our Advocacy Chair, Clyde Gaw at campak14@yahoo.com. It is important to first quantify and verify the reductions in our state. He, in turn will share with me contact information so that a letter can be sent.It is important to stay vigilant in our efforts to promote quality art education. Please help us by continuing your support of AEAI through your membership and your participation.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE AEAI CONSTITUTION/BYLAWS
Changes to the AEAI, Inc. Constitution & Bylaws must be approved by the general membership at the AEAI Business Meeting, which occurs annually at the Fall Convention. The membership of AEAI must be made aware of these proposals at least sixty days prior to the General Business Meeting. The following changes to the Constitution/Bylaws are proposed:
1.Page 14 (Bylaws)
ADD:
“Section 10.The Awards Committee. The Awards Committee shall plan, coordinate, and conduct award activities on behalf of the Association.Duties of the Award Committee are listed in the Operational Handbook.”
Rationale for Addition:While included in the standing committees of the Constitution (p. 8), the Awards Committee is left off the list of standing committees in the Bylaws. This change adds consistency throughout the document.
